“When I adjudicate a recorded song, good arrangements factor into my judgment. Anyone can record a melody and put basic guitar, bass and drums lines to selections. But the studio is a canvas whereby good arrangers can paint subtle colors that enrich the main melodies. The Beatles were masters at this especially during and after their Sgt. Peppers’ phase, and Brian Wilson’s “God Only Knows” and “Good Vibrations” comes to mind, among others. By this standard, The Transducers’ “Ray” is, too, a work of art. Subtle colors, like an abbreviated delay tastefully entered to the lead vocals, a single angelic female voice that gently layers a phrase in one spot, vocal arrangements that alternate between 1-3-5 and 1-5 harmonies and a synth patch which bookends the composition alongside tasty guitar and bass lines weaved in with cameo appearances. In all, “Ray” is not just a song, but a work of art. Creating arrangements is laborious. And this paid off. Bravo! Listen to Ray on headphones while devouring a lemon tart pudding with a glass of brandy as I did. Time well spent.”
